Some show notes:

As we transition from Spring Break to the second half of the semester, the arrival of false spring in Virginia and Pennsylvania influences their beverage choices for today’s episode. Jadrian went with a Ranch Water from Karbach Brewery in Houston, while Matt enjoyed a Brotherly Love Hazy IPA from Victory Brewing. Both of us have been in a good mood lately because we’ve found some really good breweries. Jadrian learned that the Beale Brewery is not too far from his home, and got to spend a nice weekend enjoying their selection:

During his cruise, Matt stumbled upon the Rip Ty’d Brewery in Nassau, a hidden gem that’s just a 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal. It turns out that Jadrian visited before and echoed Matt's enthusiasm for the brewery. Rip Ty’d Brewery boasts a diverse selection of beers on tap and is a refreshing alternative for cruise passengers looking to savor local flavors. For anyone planning a visit to Nassau in the future, Rip Ty’d Brewery is worth exploring firsthand.

While in the Bahamas, Matt also checked out Pirate Republic Brewing Company’s Tap Room, and recommends that as well.

This episode focuses on the complex and enduring issue of the Principal-Agent Problem, which occurs when one party (the principal) delegates decision-making authority or tasks to another party (the agent), but their interests may not align. Drawing from various examples across industries, from CEO decision-making to real estate transactions, conflicting incentives can lead to inefficiencies and suboptimal outcomes.

We also discussed some of the potential solutions to address the Principal-Agent Problem. It’s important to align incentives between principals and agents. There are some specific examples around compensation schemes, like stock options for CEOs, to ensure that agents' actions are aligned with the principals' interests. There may also be a chance to change contract structures to mitigate conflicts of interest and improve outcomes.

This week’s pop culture references:

Matt and Jadrian shared a few pop culture references this week given how common the principal-agent problem is. Jadrian kicks off the discussion by referencing Freakonomics, a classic book that both he and Matt credit with inspiring countless students to pursue the study of economics. They turned it into a movie, which includes a scene on the principle-agent problem with real estate agents:

Matt shares a couple of intriguing pop culture examples. He starts with a reference to the beloved TV show Friends, where all the friends were depicted as less-than-stellar employees. Matt highlights a memorable moment when Rachel Green jokingly considers giving disliked customers a "sneeze-muffin."

Matt also points to HBO's Succession as another source of illuminating examples of the principal-agent problem. He highlights a compelling storyline involving Kendall, who exploits his position as CEO for personal gain rather than aligning with the Board of Directors' objective of a sale.

Jadrian also brought up a clip from Wanda Sykes where she discusses how people treat their nieces and nephews different than they would treat their own kids - it is worth watching!

Thanks again for listening!
